The front and back cover of Donald Mitchell's book - Stonehaven Shops 1960 - 2020 - carried a sketch of the Market Square. Many individuals have admired the sketch and asked if they can purchase a copy. Unfortunately the museum will not be selling this item. Stonehaven Shops BookA new book, published in time for Christmas, will bring back memories for generations of Stonehaven folk, telling the story of the many shops and businesses in the Town over the past 60 years. Willie Main was born in Stonehaven on the 31st January 1884, the second son of Jane Scott and shoemaker James Main; he was one of three boys and six girls and the family lived at 1, Old Pier at Stonehaven Harbour. Four of Willie's siblings emigrated to Australia and New Zealand at the start of the 20th century. The museum had been looking forward to re-opening after the long lockdown and we spent considerable time, energy and money in adjusting the museum to comply with Government guidelines. We actually re-opened on the last weekend in July as a trial and this was successful; it had been our intention to restrict opening to Saturdays and Sundays only until visitors and volunteers had confidence that there was a minimum risk from the virus.
