Recently Mrs Joyce Stephen, latterly of Aberdeen, bequeathed an oil painting by George Kelly to the Tolbooth Museum. It is a striking picture of the Tolbooth and Stonehaven harbour. Although it is not dated it was probably painted in the 1950's as it shows the building without a roof and it is known that the roof was replaced circa 1961. We are gratefull for this bequest as it adds a little more to the known history of Stonehaven.

On Saturday 28th October George Swapp visited the museum to sign copies of his latest book entitled 'Stonehaven Street Names'. The event was hosted by the Stonehaven Heritage Society who published the book and additional copies can be obtained from our Online Store. There was a large turnout of the local community who wished to purchase a signed copy of the book and to reminisce with George over the history of Stonehaven.Thanks to the Society for providing the refreshments and creating an...
The museum frequently finds coins of different currencies in our donation box and we welcome all such donations. However, we recently discovered an unusual coin in the box. Whilst the museum appreciates such gestures, in this particular case we have some concerns that the donor may have some sentimental and/or financial attachment to the coin and that the donation was made by accident. Since we took over the museum from Aberdeenshire Council the committee has had concerns over the low level of lighting available in the building. Neither the Council nor ourselves had the financial resources to renew the lighting but the committee were determined to find a solution. After a number of years of fund raising, together with two donations from the Stonehaven & District Lions Club and a sizeable grant from the Meikle Carewe Windfarm Community Fund, we are now in a position to...
